Facial Reconstruction

The most commonly broken bones in the face are the nose, the eye sockets (orbital fracture), the cheekbones (malar fracture). Depending on your particular injury type, facial reconstruction may be either a simple, one-time procedure, or a series of complex surgeries. In either case, Dr. Shaw is uniquely qualified to treat these injuries as one of the few double board certified surgeons in both ENT Head and Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

The Reconstruction Procedure

Facial reconstruction procedures vary depending on your particular needs. Some procedures such those for advanced skin cancer often involve several steps. These types of surgeries entail biopsies to determine cancer risk, thorough removal of cancerous areas, and necessary reconstruction. The reconstruction process in this case may require repairing missing tissue with flaps or tissue grafts. Given the range of complexity in individual cases, several procedures may be required to help patients reach their ideal results.

Expected Surgical Results

Depending on the complexity of your facial reconstruction surgery, some downtime may be required. Patients with complex issues may need to be cared for in the hospital for several days after surgery. Those that do not have any complications or those undergoing relatively minor procedures can go home after surgery. Depending on your injury type, additional laser treatments may be necessary to reduce scarring signs. Complete healing following your treatment may take 6 or more weeks. Dr. Travis Shaw performs all surgeries with the highest level of care and precision to minimize downtime and expedite the healing process.
